A New Beginning
|
|
This is it. I took some time to show myself I still knew how to do
something. And this is it! I've created some scripts that will
run twice daily posting new content as I make it available. And,
maybe, just maybe, I'll actually take time to make that content.
Such is life. It goes. On.

One little test
|
|
If this gets posted at 6:00am, then BOO YAH, I love this game.
Happy Christmas Eve y'all. I think this just might be working!
(Oh, and I'll work on the contrib, about, and features links next.
I know those don't work... yet.)

The Morning After
|
|
Yesterday was bunchloads of good times. I ate. I saw the family. All
was good. The presents were quite dandy, as well. After a very full
day, I really didn't feel like doing much. I slept (relatively) early
last night. And only today did I actually get around to responding to
some email from last week and touching up news@sg. Well, it should be
a quiet night. Then, tomorrow afternoon, I head back to Urbana to work
at Krannert for the Intervarsity conference. New Years? Yeah, I don't
know yet. Eh. Oh, and I still have some holiday cards to do still.

Six Degrees of Amtrak
|
|
So Saturday, I'm taking the train back to Urbana because I have to work
at Krannert because there's a conference coming into town. Since I've
traveled back and forth on the train a good number of times, I'm familiar
with procedure, how it works and all that. And I usually hold out and
hope that maybe some cute girl will sit with me or something. (Like
how I'm getting your hopes up?) Well, it wasn't to be this time around.
A family guy travelling back to Urbana a day early, ahead of the rest of
his family is who I ended up sitting with. So, we're talking about
random stuff on the train... I tell him which bus he can take back to
his house and whatever, and I say, I know someone who used to live in
that area. Well, it turns out that this guy is the guy that bought the
house I was thinking about from my friend Matt H. I was like, "yeah, so
I guess I've spent a week at your house a few summers ago, before you
even owned the place." And that he knows Zach M of the IMC, and the
parents of a former full time Kranstaff person I know, and the parents
of a kid who went to and left IMSA (and happened to live in the wing
that I was the RA for). Total crazy connections, there. Just thought
I'd share. Nice guy. And you thought I was going to talk about something
list related.

Urbana 2003
|
|
For some reason, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is just
the place to hold a super international conference for 15,000 people or
something. Perhaps it's because such an event can take over the town
and have control over buses, and, really now, the campus is quite
walkable. Well, anyways, for the first time in ever, this Intervarsity
convention managed to book Krannert as a host site for some of its events.
Having no clue what to expect, the whole building was expecting the worst-
thousands upon thousands of visitors for three days. I planned all I
could even before my little Christmas break. Yet, I still managed to
not fall asleep due to personal worry until 4:30am the night before it
all started. Worry- that's what I do... but it ended up being so much
smaller than anticipated. Not a big deal at all! "It was like working
three non-tickets, no-programs, more-than-normal attended School of Music
events." And working with everyone was so nice and plesant, it happened
without any major incident. If only we had more information in advance
about what was going on at Krannert and about the convention in general.
Not knowing anything, I ended up scheduling 2 female ushers and 2 female
usher supervisors for a lecture double-header about something about men
and the computer era where only guys were allowed to attend. Well, that
got worked out, but whatever. And it's over now. Yay!

Campustown Update
|
|
When I was home a few days ago, I got a letter from the university saying
I had an unpaid parking ticket. Of course, imagine me getting a parking
ticket- because I drive oh so much. It was apparently for an expired
meter from October 2000. (I didn't even have a license!) Well, it was
my family's car, and they must have finally run the plates, and I'm the
only one in my family that ever had a parking space registered with the
University, so I guess that's why they sent me the bill. Whatever. I'm
going to bill my mom for that one, anyways. So, continuing the story,
I thought I'd pay the ticket in person at Campus Parking on Monday morning.
Well, I couldn't. Campus Parking's apparently on vacation until next
week. My letter did say I could go to the administration building and
pay a cashier over there, but apparently I was told a lie. They couldn't
help me until parking actually billed my university account for the ticket.
And they hadn't. They hadn't forwarded the charges yet. Punks. I guess
the university will have to wait until next year to get their money. It's
not like I'm going to run out of the usual 2-3 day grace period to pay
the ticket before the fine goes up, since that expired, oh, over three
years ago... Oh, yes, "Campustown Update"... since I'm walking around and
taking care of business, I also took the opportunity to drop off some film
at Walgreens. I also noticed that a new dining establishment will be
opening at the former Steve and Barry's clothing store. It's called
"Soylent Green Street"- where people go to eat and be eaten. Doesn't
that sound yummy? And, as a final note, Figaro's, the classical music
store above Record Service, will be closing forever today. (Record
Service is slated to close at the end of the Spring semester, I think.)
There was a story about it in the Daily Illini. You can probably find
it in their archives around December 10 or 11.

Out in the Real World
|
I'd just completed watching Sarah kick another Real Worlder off of the
MTV Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet. So, I'm getting ready
to hang out with some people at Legends Monday night, and I leave the TV
on and there's this MTV News Special about Paul. Who's Paul? He's the
blurred out guy from Real World 9 - New Orleans. He was blurred out
because at the time, he was dating one of the guys on the show and he
was serving in the military. Don't ask, don't tell. Well, I was already
in the Real World mindset when Anna Z called and asked if there was ever
a Jamie on Real World or Road Rules. So, I say "yeah, there's a Jamie
on Real World 9 New Orleans... yeah, I think he's from Chicagoland".
And Anna Z says thanks... I'll tell ya later. Well, below is "later"-
IMs I got while I was out...
- (11:24:04 PM): hey there...sorry for that random phone call...you were a great help!
- (11:27:34 PM): basically we were sitting in this cafe (some high
school friends of mine and myself) and this guy walks in...so my friend
jackie and i are staring at him because we both recognize him but cant
figure out from where. so then my friend tom asks the guy his name and
if he lives in skokie (cause that's where we thought he was from), but
he says that he's from wilmette and he went to new trier and his name
is jaime. and then my friend jackie realized that it's probably the
guy from new orleans, and i didnt believe her so i called you cause
you're the expert at that stuff
- (11:27:37 PM): so THAANKS!

Trivia Tuesday, December 30
|
|
Jen, Glen, Paul, Melanie, and Chris enjoyed in the festivities of the
final Trivia Tuesday of 2003. Good times, of course, except for the
everyone doing horribly to close the Showdown game. On the upside:
I have now exceeded the 750,000 Player's Plus Points threshold, which
demonstrates to everyone that I really do spend a whole lot of time
playing trivia over there. Along with that achievement, my "Plus
Sign" next to my name will now be purple instead of red. Woohoo!

Illinois at Illinois-Chicago (Men's Basketball)
|
|
The University of Illinois (Urbana) (8-2) beat its cross-state same
namesake (Chicago) (9-4) at the United Center in Chicago Tuesday evening
75-60. They've won, like, tons of times in a row there now. Okay, ten
times. It was nine times, as that comes before ten. Nine times. (Oh,
Ferris.) Unfortunately, the game was on at the same time as Trivia
Tuesday so it was quite the distraction. Although, really, we just
didn't know the right answers today. There was even a period of about
five minutes at the start of the game where the local Champaign channel
lost the satelite feed it was getting from WBBM-TV in Chicago. All of
Buffalo Wild Wings booed. That was probably just as well, anyways, since
I forgot that we were actually the visiting team, so I mistakenly cheered
for white (them) for a minute or so at the beginning. It was cool.
Anyways, next up is Illinois State - the only school to lose to Illinois
football this season. How exciting.

Day of Gr-eight-ness
|
According to the records, I turn 8,888 days old today. No fun or
exciting plans, though. Anyways, for fun, here's a historical
listing of what past New Year's Eves in the last 1,500 days were like:
- 2002: Worked the morning in Urbana, got home in Hillside with
two hours to go. Watched people sing.
- 2001: At the Funky Butt in New Orleans, on the eve of an Illinois
football loss at the Sugar Bowl. (Should have been the Rose Bowl if
it weren't for that BCS Championship game rotation.)
- 2000: Wandering back and forth between two parties blocks away
from each other in Urbana, while listening to a top 94 countdown in
an attempt to try to win a radio contest at midnight.
- 1999: Hung out in front of the ABC2000 cameras on Miami Beach
holding up a plastic pink flamingo I borrowed from Krannert storage.
