The Happenings
High School Reunion
Friday night, there was a very random clumping of people I went to high
school with in the Champaign-Urbana area... I mean, really, is there
really any other better place to spend your Labor Day weekend than in
Champaign County? Well, anyways, it was nice to see some faces I
haven't seen in a while, and we had a delightful gathering at Dos
Reales on Prospect.
Eight Thousand, Four Hundred One Days
Saturday, I turned the ripe old age of twenty-three. The day as a whole
was fairly uneventful. I woke up just a bit earlier than normal for a
Saturday, and did just a bit more. There was a small gathering at Buffalo
Wild Wings where, whilst trivia knowledge demonstration was in progress,
the Fighting Illini lost their football season opener. Oh well. Later
that evening, I had a solitairy round of Putt Putt golf before hanging
out in Krannert checking my email in the silence of a quiet (duh) night.
It ended with Josh and I hanging out and watching Evil Dead 1 and 2 at
a random really old-school high school establishment. (Old-school in that
it was at the house of people that graduated from the same high school
as me, but earlier. Get it?)
Family Reunion
It was quite the delight to hang out with my brother Mark and sister Cheryl
as we convened for a Labor Day dinner and to "celebrate" my birthday. I heard
all about what they'd done since I moved out of the temporary housing that
was provided to me at their apartment, and I showed off my newly obtained
piece of plastic that was aquired Friday afternoon: my University of Illinois
Faculty/Staff ID card. It's wild. It's crazy. I'm old.
The Un-Trivia
Tuesday, there was Trivia. Or rather, there was Josh. No one else at all
made an appearance, not even me. I had to fill in for an out of commission
house manager who had to make a trip to the hospital for some tests. It was
a very sad day in the world of Tuesday Trivia. Chris would be disappointed
in us all.
Actually Watched a Movie
"The Evil Dead" (1982): Making its final appearance as a part of Mr. Miller's
Evil Dead marathon, this was just a nice annual showing of a bad movie that
just makes it good. I mean, really, how can one deny the greatness of a film
where you can see the box the moon was pasted into for its "special effects"?
"Evil Dead II" (1987): Oh, it's like the first. And it follows the plot,
or story, or something. Oh, wait, the "when we last left our star" conveniently
left out the people that were in the first one that didn't quite live to make
the sequel plot-wise. And who knew blood could be so colorful? So many
different varieties, I guess.
"Lethal Weapon" (1987): Another nice classic from the movie from the eighties.
Action, violence, and stuff... not that I terribly enjoy that sort of thing, but
still... It is kinda weird, however, that you can stop and think, gee, this is
fifteen years old. Wow, I'm old. I never watched movies from 1972 when I was
that young, but I guess people are like that and all... tying pop culture to
life events and stuff. Maybe that's why WGN seems to go a little wild for
Charles Bronson once in a while.
"She's All That" (1999): Can we say "another our generation movie that makes
you go awww if you're like me and wished lists weren't empty"? Watching it
just made me think, "oh, and yeah" relating various little tidbits of stuff and
tying it to former lists (retroactively applied if necessary). Yeah, not the
thing I should be doing. Oh well.
"the list"
empty - yeah.

The Happenings
Everyman Everywhere
So I kinda live at the Krannert Center... I no longer work in the business
office, but I will still randomly work randomly elsewhere. Last Wednesday's
adventures took me around campus as I wandered around to many departmental
academic offices and dropped off posters. It was very nice to just take a
few hours off and walk around. Very very nice. My travels took me as far
East as Busey, as far South as Florida, as far West as 5th, and as far North
as Green (University on day two)!
Leash Broken
The fabled device known as the electronic leash was discovered to be missing.
It disappeared Wednesday during the two hour period where I was wandering
around campus delivering posters. It was lost somewhere in the area bounded
by Busey on the East, Florida on the South, 5th on the West, and Green on
the North. Immediately after discovering the loss, the poster run was
suspended as I restarted the path traversed and checked as many offices as
I could along the route. I also called my phone at every payphone I walked
by. The sad thing is that since I had just left Krannert, the sound was turned
off, so the ringing of the phone would be inaudible. How that phone fell out
of my pocket and unclipped itself from my pants is beyond me.
Life Goes On
Five o'clock came by before I could fully retrace my steps, so most offices
closed before I could check with them all. There was no answer at the lost
telephone. In desparation, I emailed it saying something to the effect of
"Hi. I lost a phone. THIS phone. Please email me or call me at" blah blah.
This was also much to no avail. I decided to call Cingular to report it lost
so I could suspend outgoing calls or whatever, but at that time of day, the
automated phone recording voice lady said the anticipated hold time was twenty
five minutes. After five minutes, I hung up. Life had to go on.
See You, Tech Show
I hurryingly (is that a word?) made my way to a bus which took me to the place
of former employment, the Holiday Inn Urbana. The hotel was hosting the annual
Champaign area Tech Show highlighting the, well, tech companies of the area.
I was only able to be there for a whopping 15 minutes before I had to return
to campus to house manage the first official performance of the year. I did
partake in four cups of lemonade and did see some friends. Good times, or
something.
So Simple So Late
It is so much easier to report the phone as lost late at night. All I had to
do was follow through a sequence of random phone key pushes, and, well, there
you go! It was so easy and barely took a few minutes, it was kinda scary.
Stalkers
Good (Friday) morning. Did you lose a cell phone? We believe we have your
cell phone here in the Payroll Office of Henry Administration Building. It
took us a while to realize that the phone wasn't ringing and that it was turned
off. We randomly looked down and saw there was, like, twenty five missed phone
calls. So, we were able to figure out how to unlock the keys and go through
your phone book. Didn't know how to check the messages, though, because we
saw there was two there. We called a random number from a random person in
your phone book; of course, it had to be a local number, and when we went
through some of the names of the people in there, and after she was confused
as to why someone would be calling her cell phone at eight in the morning, she
concluded it had to be your phone. And, fortunately, you're in the University
Payroll system. So, we called up the Krannert Center main number and discovered
you work a lot, but randomly. It's a good thing your information is up to date,
as we were able to call you, there, whilst still asleep at your apartment.
So, just come on by, and your phone will be waiting in that office on the
North side of the hallway with the cashiers.
Heroes
Thanks to the people in Henry who took care of the phone while it was on its
unscheduled vacation, and also to my bestest hero in the world, Caitlin, for
identifying that the phone must obviously belong to me. Yay!
Jammin With Benjam
Saturday was oh so long, but it was oh so fun. While a dream of going to a
Saint Louis Cardinals game versus the Chicago Cubs down South went away,
well, like it was a dream. The morning began at Perkins with a breakfast with
Benjam, where I showed off my recovered phone and its new Wireless Web service!
Nothing says lovin' like a crappy cell phone radar image of the area! The day
continued with my crashing the Ticket Office's orientation and wandering around
on their tour. And while that was going on, I snuck away to buy a mighty fine
chair from the every other yearly Krannert Center Costume and Prop Sale.
Knowing that the good stuff is usually gone early, this purchase was made about
five minutes after the event opened to the public. I hung out in the building
for an hour or two, aside from the help Shayan gave to move my second piece of
purchased furniture to the 709 Establishment. I watched the end of the miserable
Illini game from the trivialand of BW3, purchased some binders for historical
use, and ended the day by being reunited with Benjam and others as we had a
fine and plesant evening at the Courier Cafe. For those of you who were
wondering, the mystery shake of Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Butterscotch was
correctly guessed!
Morning Work
Working in the morning is so gosh darn confusing! Well, not really, but I tend
to wake up around nine or ten and spread six to eight hours of work through
the entirity of a day. Monday, however, was quite different with the local
paper, the News Gazette, holding an independent newspaper symposium all day at
Krannert. So, I was up and about at 7am and worked all the way through 4pm.
Fortunately, I didn't have to stay for the evening, but, boy, I just didn't
know what I should do with myself that night. I was so bored! I went to sleep
super early, like 10pm, but still.
Reunited; Glad I Quit; You Should?
Tuesday, I caught up with two wonderful friends I kinda worked with at the
fine lodging establishment back in the day. Miss Megan and Miss Michelle
worked the evenings most days, and worked it well, and I would normally come
in and take over for the overnight. It was a very reminicive kind of lunch,
where we talked about how life, or at least work was, and how it is now.
The ongoing Bears and Illini football seasons has brought and will continue
to bring them their war stories, and I just smiled and knew I didn't have to
do it anymore. I wish them the best in not freaking out and staying sane with
all that activity and funness that busy weekends bring.
The Un-Trivia
Tuesday, there was Trivia. Or rather, there was Zach and I. Meghan and Kari
came by later on in the evening after the big event already started. Without
a full complement of knowledge at the table, it was very difficult to keep
up with the point powerhouse table that we compete against. The table will
and inspiration just wasn't there this time. Hopefully, things will change
next time around. Next Tuesday, everyone! You know the drill, or email me
to be informed of it!
Who Wants To Be Ordinary
With a very quiet Monday evening, I guess I kinda caught up on the TV series
I never watched anyways: MTV's Sorority Life. The shows finale aired, and,
well, it was just there. Yeah, don't have much to say about that one. Wow.
Filler. =) I was kinda disappointed. But not really.
SOM Ticketing Challenge
And now, a contest of sorts. How well do your skills work for you as you try
to guess the number of tickets issued to a School of Music event? On the line
is a bag of candy. Rules are as follows: The winner is the person at the
end of the semester that has the lowest "Number of Tickets Off (divided by)
Number of Events". A minimum of twenty events must have guesses, and poor
showings above 25 events will be dropped. If you want to play, email your
guess! Results through week one are now official. Listing includes initials,
events guessed, and average tickets off. Top five listed only.
- KH (2) 2.50
- BS (1) 7.50
- BC (2) 31.50
- BD (1) 48.00
- DW (2) 60.50
And now, upcoming events and their guess due dates:
- Sunday, September 15: Illinois Brass Quintet (Fri 9/13, 2pm)
- Thursday, September 19: Moersch (Wed 9/18, 2pm)
- Friday, September 20: UI Symphony (Thu 9/19, 2pm)
- Saturday, September 21: Laufman (Fri 9/20, 2pm)
Actually Watched a Movie
"Crossroads" (2002): Yes, I admit it. This was actually my second viewing
of the Miss Britney Spears feature film. The first time I saw it was, yes,
it's true, opening night in the theatres. I actually enjoyed it the first
time around, and it had nothing to do with the first three minutes of the
movie - the part where Britney was singing and dancing around in her
underwear. I went in with no expectations, and left delightfully happy.
It wasn't bad, really. I wouldn't classify it as bad. The poor movie just
got a bad rap because of the low expectations placed on it due to its star
being its star. This second time around, I still enjoyed it, overall. It was
viewed at a friends, who just happened to own the DVD - which comes with a
sing with Britney section that surely was used following the film. Fun times,
indeed.
"Tin Cup" (1996): Saw this one before, too. It reminded me that I kinda want
to be remembered, and to leave a mark that just could be immortal. While a
seven iron golf club would work for Roy, I guess I need to find my way of
being magical. Any suggestions?
"the list"
empty - will it ever stop...

The Happenings
For September 11, 2001
Yeah, Ya Know?
Of course, I am not known for being the a particularly verbose or expressive
individual, seeing as how I'll make up words or repeatedly use the same
phrase, like, fifteen billion times. But, yeah. I woke up the morning of this
year's September 11th and just remembered and took in what was going on. I
remember how last year, September 11th was a Tuesday. I wasn't working at the
Holiday Inn as of yet, and I slept in, as I had no reason to be awake. I
turned on the radio that morning when I got up around 9:15ish or so, and was
confused as to why I heard the "news update" sound effect they normally use
in the morning show, which would normally be over by then. And then I heard.
I heard of what happened in New York. I jumped out of bed and ran into the
living room, where the rest of my roommates were already camped out in front
of the TV, catching the story unfolding before our eyes. I remember watching
the buildings fall. I remember watching every channel I could. I remember
being constantly updated from my high school's newsgroup equivalent, as every
major news website was failing the world, unable to meet demand. High school
alumni posting every minute every piece of news they got - we were all over
the country, it was wild. I remember cooking a pizza as my solitary meal
that day, and, when all was said and done, my first trip out of my apartment
was a short walk across the field to the Holiday Inn where some friends were
working. By then, it was 11pm at night. It was a very sad day. I was assured
that no one I knew, at least from my high school class, and immediate family
and friends, were, well, yeah. Time just stopped. And, of course, at the same
time, it kept going. The next day, things were in the works for a campuswide
rememberance at Krannert. Things went on. Anyways, flash forward to September
11, 2002. With my alarm set for 5:00ish in the morning, and nothing to do
until later in the afternoon, I was ready to watch the ensuing news coverage.
And, when it finally hit, well, it finally hit. Those its, being different,
that is. For, it was there, and then, did I really, I guess, mourn. I really
felt it. Sitting in my recently acquired chair, and loads of napkins littering
my bedside... I really felt saddened with what the world lost. And I didn't
know anyone lost. I thought, "very horrible..." but, well, that's the way I
am. It was a very, well, personal moment for me. At around 8:45am, my mom
told me about a bomb threat where she works, and how security was really tight.
And we were both happy in knowing that we were both okay where we were at.
And, the morning progressed. I stumbled over to Krannert, buying newspapers
at the gas station on the way, and, it was business as usual for me. I worked
the campuswide rememberance, and made my way home, eventually. And that was
the day - finishing with a viewing of the second round of news specials from
the evening and a late dinner at my brother's and sister's apartment. I know
that the world is wraught with wrong all the time. And you feel sad about it.
But you remember the goodness that there is out there as well. I don't know.
But I'm happy that I have what I have, all around.
Opening Night
And so officially begins another season at the Krannert Center. Opening night
started with a 100-minute-ish performance by a quartet and a welcome by Mr.
Director, and proceed to the Great Hall for the main performance of the night,
Cassandra Wilson, and followed with an afterglow post-performance in the lobby.
It was the first night where the new Patron Services changes were in force for
a Marquee performance, and, well, it was a learning experience. Attempting to
start on time didn't go well, and I felt late seating was a disaster, but I
guess it was okay. Sadly, I have nothing exciting to report.
Being Supportive
The University of Illinois football home opening at the shared home with the
Chicago Bears took place Saturday, September 14th versus Arkansas State. I
was without tickets for the game... until the day before. The prize station,
Mix 94.5, was giving away pairs of tickets to anyone who visited Brownfield
Sports that Friday afternoon after 4pm. Of course, I was there to get my
fair share. And, I called my sister on her phone, and got her to come over
so she could get a pair of tickets as well... for the next weekend. You see,
we had a choice of either that past weekend, or the next one (versus San Jose
State). Yay for tickets; tickets for me; yay for tickets; tickets for free!
What To Do
What was a me to do for a fine unKrannert Friday night than set around online.
And that I did, from my computer in the Krannert. And also, whilst in my
indecision to not do anything, I won the Mix 94.5 top five at nine. And my
prize this time: two orders of Chili's Baby Back Ribs, or substitute entree!
And then I decided that Josh and I should go to Perkins for dinner. And we
did. And then we went to the game the next day. And we won. Big time.
Like Norm
Sunday translated to an evening dinner with Doug capitalizing on the two
Beef and Cheddars for three dollars at the local Arby's. Monday translated
to an evening dinner with Doug capitalizing on the buy one get one Six Dollar
Burger for $3.95 at the local Hardee's. Nothing says eating good in the
neighborhood for not a lot of money. Well, except for maybe an Applebee's
commercial.
The Trivia
Another good week. Good times. Sara came along to visit and rode the party
bus, as Zach came away with a third place finish and a bottle of special sauce.
All was right in the world, except for the pouring rain that evening. And
here's a big ol' shout out to those two girls working at Pier One doing
inventory or something and keeping us entertained for the five minutes we were
all huddled outside the store waiting for the bus.
SOM Ticketing Challenge
Week 2 is all said and done, and leading the way is Anna Z, who is not even
on campus! The ticketing challenge continues to grow, now with a large and
in charge group of seventeen playing along! Use your magical skills of
guessing, and have fun. More information is available at the website at
brian.sweetgoodness.org/som/.
Actually Watched a Movie
"Pleasantville" (1998): Television surely plays a large roll in life,
especially if your life becomes an existance within one. See what happens
when the idealist visions fall at the hands of knowledge of the world
around you. Oh, and Reese Witherspoon's a cutie in this pre-Spiderman
Toby Maguire film. That's allright. Those kids do a fine job for sucking
it up and taking it for the team in their blast into the past in a box.

The Happenings
Very Productive Thursday
I sure did accomplish a lot last Thursday. So I got up at 9am and didn't
really do anything until 10:30am. That surely does not diminish all that
happened. I went into work and thought to myself, "if I work today, and
I have to work tonight for the show, then I should take some time off." So
I did. I then decided I should go watch a movie. And then I thought, "well,
if I'm going to be up over there, anyways, I should eat lunch out there." So
I did. 15 minutes after arriving at work, I punched out and made my way over
to the North Prospect area to indulge in some 75 cent chicken tenders at
Buffalo Wild Wings. And an hour later, I found myself at the Beverly watching
a fine film. Then, I took a series of buses bringing me to the Mix 94.5
studios so I could claim my previously afforemensioned prize and eventually
made my reappearance at Krannert. Not even an hour later, I left again with
my brother and sister to go buy their Men's Basketball season tickets and
my football tickets for the Ohio State game. We had dinner, and then I was
off to work. It was a relatively full day - much more than ordinary in this
crazy mixed up world.
Breakfast Hours
I took my yet another Friday night off to catchup on the busy life and
personal paperwork Thursday left behind. And in the end, I had breakfast
as a dinner with Vince at Perkins, before sleeping and having breakfast at
lunchtime with Anna Z and company at Aunt Sonya's. It's that place just
behind the Chancellor Hotel on Kirby by Custard Cup. Anyways, I always said
to myself that one day, I'd go and eat there sometime. And now, in my seventh
year on campus, there I went. See? Dreams really do come true, or something.
Grrr
The Illini were in town playing San Jose State this past Saturday at Memorial
Stadium. They lost. The Chicago Bears were in town playing New Orleans this
past Sunday at Memorial Stadium. They lost.
Free Stuff, Of Course!
I joined Piotr, and benjam was there, at an amazon.com job recruitment lecture
thingy. It was fun, I learned a bit about jobstuffs, but there was also the
free dinner as well: pizza from Papa John's! And of course, I also claimed
myself a free T-Shirt, which I proudly wore the next day. Yeah, okay.
The Trivia
Another good week. Good times. Sara didn't come with - she had another scheduled
event but assured me that she was not scared away. Jack and Carolyn were there,
along with Zach, Josh Bi., Zach's roommate Aaron, and Kari and both her
roommates. Piotr and Dyanna also took the night off, and boy did they miss
a great night of representation by the table. The seven trivia boxes at our
table swept the top seven places at the restaurant. We were all quite unhappy
when we found out there was no prizeage to be enjoyed by the top three finishers
for the big game that evening. Very unhappy. I just might organize a boycott
or something, but I was most assuredly unhappy - especially since I was the
winner! We will see what happens. Maybe I'll write a letter, but they will
have next week to repent and redeem themselves! Here are the top 15 scores:
1 FEELIT 52893
2 ZACH 50895
3 JOSH 50857

It was like destiny! The final question was basically, "St. Mark's Passion is
what?" Way to go Krannert to schedule that later this semester!
SOM Ticketing Challenge
Week 3 is all said and done, and leading the way is Maureen R, who was the
overall leader after each of the last three events. Sadly, she said she's
taking the next week off in terms of guessing. Jim R and Dawson W won the
three events during week 3 by a combined total of seven tickets! Now totaling
34 participants through week 3, get your guesses in for week 4 events! That
magical deadline where there are only 20 events left is fast approaching...
well, not that fast, but still. You'll need that many to qualify for the prize.

Actually Watched a Movie
"Lovely and Amazing" (2001): My choice in selection was inspired mainly
by the convenient showtime with respect to my schedule Thursday afternoon,
but it also did get a good review from the Daily Illini's Buzz entertainment
weekly. I can't really quite explain it. I mean, it's not like you go and
watch and you get this enlightening thought and/or plot resolution. But it
was cool. Yeah, one of those, but I liked it. And they did go to McDonald's,
so could I really say anything bad? It is now evident why I don't get paid
to review films.
"Office Space" (1999): A classic movie, if classic can really be three years
ago. A delight to see on the silver screen, despite seeing it many times.
After all, it was the inspiration to the very unofficial official quote from
my trip to New Orleans last New Year's: "No salt, no salt!" It reaffirmed
that if I too had a million dollars, I wouldn't really want to work, either.
Not that that's a change. But what really bothers me is that I think the
sign for the boss parking space changed from the intro sequence to other
scenes later in the movie. Would someone verify that? I think the sign
loses the person's VP title or something.
"the list"
empty - I sense a potential change, but really, who am I kidding?

after that
Careful thought about an East Coast field trip made me realize that I can't
really be prancing around the country right now. It's sad, because I really
looked forward to it. Oh, me, being rational.
