The Happenings

the heck is this?

Since I've been perpetually over my quota, I decided I was going to move my web site to a real place of hosting, rather than continually play quota games with the high school server. So, thanks to csoft.net for hosting and gandi.net for domain registration, we've got this excellent waste of the internet. I hope to update this weekly, on Wednesdays (heh)... we'll see what happens.

Italia

My field trip to Italy at the end of June was a great time. I saw lots of great sights, as evidenced by my seven rolls of pictures. I'd have to say that I was happy to be back where there are more air conditioners and ice is more free-flowing. It was like a Chicago humid-nasty hot, and without the presence of a lake, it was not very comfortable. Venice, however, was nice. And I loved wandering the streets (more like alleys) like a rat in a maze!

Jim and the shot glasses

Jim, a collector of shot glasses, was absolutely thrilled when he got the shot glasses I got for him from my European field trip. There was a cute little one from the country of San Marino, and another one, which I felt was pretty cool - because I purchased it from Vatican City. There's this store that was on a roof of a building, on the way up to the top of St. Peter's Basilica, and there it was. A shot glass. I could not pass up the opportunity!

marry her!

On July 5, it was announced that Angela P. just got engaged to Andy! It was only a matter of time...

brief contact

And now, people I saw briefly, that I haven't seen in a while... that punk, Stacy showed her face in Illinois and stopped by to say "hey" and to show me delightful pictures from the Pacific Time Zone. Make fun of her and say she's marrying Sean. She'll hate me. Marynia, who apparently was in town all summer long until this weekend randomly stopped by the Kran, looking for something. Nice to see you, too. And welcome back to town for Megan Ge. White Castle. Must go! Oh, and msteinbe is alive, in case anyone's wondering.

Apartment 621

It's been a long time now since Michelle left the apartment to finish the summer back at home. I miss her and the fine games of Sorry and Guess Who that we've had. Dyanna, exported to Hedonism =) is still, well, there, as in not in the apartment. And John, with his realization that no one is around, has moved his TV and VCR into the living room and brought over a pillow and blanked and permanently left it on the couch. Oh, one month to go... sigh.

also back in the country

Chris is back. He is now once again available to be subjected to me via phone. Ha, ha.

The Happenings

loose ends

I failed to mention that I went to the Taste of Chicago back on July 2 for the few hours immediately before I got on an Amtrak train back to Urbana. I think the Taste's pretty cool, and highly recommend going... hopefully it won't be unbearably hot and/or humid when you go next year. I didn't get as much free stuff as I had hoped, but I was delighted when I ran into a tent giving away free Mountain Dew Code Red. They had Code Red shot drinking contests, and I was disappointed that I found the tent just after they'd found their contestants. I so could have downed 30 shots of Code Red before anyone they chose. And what was on the line? A T-Shirt!

The New Sound of the Mix

July 3 brought about yet another set of items to add to the prize pool. I won the lunch time trivia question on WLRW Mix 94.5, which scored me a Bloomin' Onion from Outback Steakhouse (no rules, just right!) and one pound of Orange and Blue M+M's (from Follett's Energy Squared Bookstore). A portion of these Orange and Blue delights was available at work Thursday night, a few hours after I made the trip out to the radio station to claim my prize.

That just looks weird

Yes, yes... Green Street in UI's campustown has been closed since March. As of this past week, the street's nicely paved (and was even open for a few hours out of necessity when the intersection of Wright and Green was closed in sections for repaving - imagine what that did to the buses!) and there are traffic lights up at Wright/Green and 6th/Green... they've even been flashing Red non-stop for about a week now, too. If you look in the sidewalk, you can see metal brick signs that tell you that you are, indeed, at "Fifth Street", and more crazily, are green signs that look like they light up, hanging by the stop lights saying "Green Street" and "Wright Street". Totally bizarre, and the font they used... just looks weird.

Let's get this party started

Who knew I'd actually go and hang out. Every night. Several nights in a row. Last Wednesday, benjam and I were at Murphy's with Megan (Ge.) and company, followed by a late dinner at the home of burrittos as big as your head, LaBamba's (which is opening a location by Wrigley Field, according to a sign in the restaurant). Thursday night was a field trip of almost everyone at Krannert going to Steak and Shake on North Prospect to end the night. Patron Services, Promenade, and Usher Supervisor, oh my! After work on Friday, Vince, benjam, and I went the late night hours at Merry Ann's Diner; Saturday's lunch was with benjam, Laura (J.) and boy at Fazoli's; and dinner was with the siblings at Cheddar's.

The Role of MTV's "Undressed"

MTV's Undessed provides a light, sometimes wacky way of drifting me off into slumber. However, on Thursday, my life would be changed forever. Melrose, the official apartment complex of right now, and providers of the free cable (as in, included with rent) changed their TV lineup. It was a very sudden change, and one that the TiVo was not ready for. Sure, we now get the Game Show Network, and HBO, HBO Plus, HBO Family, and ESPNews, but everything is all moved around. So, Thursday night, when I got back from Steak and Shake, I was treated to HBO's "Real Sex" as opposed to MTV's "Undressed". Now, TiVo is set to think it's taping Lifetime instead of MTV, just to get it to tape what I want.

Electronic Leash

I have given in. Saturday brought a change in Brian communications with the purchase and activation of Cingular cellular service on my Ericsson T60d silver phone. Although it may seem sudden, this was actually a part of the revised master plan back in May. As I am moving out of the previously afforementioned residential complex, and thusly, losing my personal line, funding that was funneled to that line will be sent to Cingular, instead. So, I'm just redirecting money I was already losing. No biggie, and people just might have better luck finding me.

Missed Update

Our friend, TiVo, can't surf the web (well, at least I don't think it can) to get it's updates. Instead, it calls in to a local phone number so it knows what the TV schedules are. So it can record properly (you know, whenever Elimidate and Undressed come on). Well, I always wondered how TiVo obtains its random extras, like movie trailers and Counting Crows music videos, and Best Buy ads. I surely did not believe it downloads it off the phone. And it doesn't. Here's what happened... Sunday night (er, Monday morning), I was up late watching a delightful film, and, just before 3am, TiVo said "I've got to change the channel to record something. If that's okay, don't do anything." Confused as to what it wanted to do, since I had nothing scheduled for it to do at the time, I just watched. It changed the channel to the Discovery Channel and recorded a "TiVo Service Broadcast" with the screen flashing all sorts of data in the form of black and white stripes. It was crazy. If you want to check it out, a brief investigation shows that this show is called "Advanced Paid Program" and will air next on Monday, July 22, at 3am (CDT). Last night, it ran for 22 minutes or so, and then I was treated to 8 minutes of the Austin Powers movie trailers and music videos... so that's where it gets its 'goodies'. Interesting. (As a note, since my channels were screwed up, it didn't actually get the update. TiVo thought it was recording what it was supposed to, but no. Whatever. I called TiVo-people Monday, and they'll work on it.)

Productive Monday Morning

After the TiVo incident, I obviously went to sleep really late. But in the two hours immediately after I got up (10am), I'd already called Cingular and clarified what my service plan was - exactly; I'd called TiVo to get them to try to make me my own TV lineup, so I can enjoy the sweet goodness of not having to think when I program it to record; I'd called the toll free number people to start sending my 'toll free' number to a new number; and I'd called the Credit Card 1 people to have them stop calling me about buying the optional credit card insurance at something-cents per $100 in balance. And, I asked and I got my APR lowered. Gee, how is the rest of the week going to beat that?

Actually Watched a Movie

"Deal of a Lifetime" (1999): A delightful cheesy high school love story about a guy that'd sell his soul to the devil to go out with Laurie, played by Shiri Appleby, who'd possibly be an issue if I knew her. It was interesting enough for me to want to watch all of it as opposed to sleeping when the movies started at 1-something in the morning Sunday night. You can guess how it ends... if only it were me.
"Men in Black II" (2002): It's allright, if you liked the first one. But other than that, well, yeah. It's nothing that's totally new.

brief contact

Random chance encounters this week include, but are not limited to Sam, Carolyn, Jack (lunch sometime?), Denise L. of my brother's fame, and my sister Cheryl and dear friend La'Trina. Now, where did msteinbe go? She better call me.

The Happenings

They're Too Young

So, I was actually usher supervising a show... UI Jazz Band, to be exact. Well, for this show, there were going to be some band campers attending. They're young, like, Junior High. And there were going to be a lot of them. So, to make things easier, we reserved rows for them in the theatre. After all, you can't really control them; you can only hope to contain them. My gosh, they're innovative... this one time, at band camp, a bunch of girls took these "Entire Row Reserved" signs and hung them on their shirts from their necklines... others felt cooler because they had "Entire Row Reserved - Special" signs. Something had to be done, so I recovered all the signs I could find.

Big Thursday

It was the busiest night of the summer at the Krannert Center. There were three shows all at the same time - 8pm. And, as an added bonus, the play known as the "Short Show" of the summer rotating set of plays was actually the long show of the night. It was good times... all of the house managers worked (except for me, usher supervising the Festival Theatre), and all the rest of the summer staff was there. We all, along with some usher peoples, Promenade Megan, and related friends and family ended up as a group of 14 or so at the Courier Cafe, having a good old very late family outing. It was kinda cool!

Rollover Factor

Vince's car was so close to rolling over to 00000.0 on his odometer. Actually, it was more like 50 miles away, but still. So, following the Courier outing, benjam, Vince, and I drove Eastward through the small country roads of Champaign County and back, finally hitting the mark 8 miles South of Urbana. We conveniently stopped at a sign that told us our exact mark, and, needless to say, we took a time out for a photo opportunity. It was, like, 1am or something. The timestamp on the pictures we took that night will tell us the true time; that is, once they're developed.

Yeah, I'm in Chicago

Friday and Saturday were the "Benefit" performances of the summer plays to keep the intern thing going for them. The tickets were a little more, and the shows started an hour earlier (at 7pm) so there'd be enough time for a little post-show party with singing and dancing and champagne and fruit and cheese in the lobby. Well, Friday, the actor that starts the show calls around 5pm and says he won't be in until later - he's in Chicago traffic. I'm not sure if he knew it started at seven instead of eight. Yeah, that's not cool. So, we "started" at 7:15, had a very long introductory speech, and made the audience take a musical quiz before we really started around 7:50. That sucked. I'm sure he felt really bad. His wife did.

Nasty Kind of Hot

Yeah, it just hasn't been nice outside. It's that not-so-nice and muggy feeling, or at least it was for the beginning of this week. Inspiration enough to have food delivered - hadn't done that in a while! But that didn't stop me from taking advantage of my Mon-day 'off'. I came in and worked a bit, then took a personal field trip to Damons for dinner before stopping by Best Buy prior to watching a movie, and then doing a very quick bit of Meijer shopping, all while weather was weird and rainy, and all by bus.

Follow the Bear

If you're travelling South on Lincoln Avenue, you're going to run into a bunch of Chicago Bears. They're pretty much on every traffic-light intersection as you leave Interstate 74 and head down Southward to campus. And, speaking of Bears, apparently Monday Night Football is sold out (October 7 with Green Bay). No tickets for me. But I did manage to get four tickets in ZZ (the horseshoe) for the New England Patriots game in November. We either get beaten by the World Champs, or we beat them (heck, we beat them to win Super Bowl XX)... either way, it should be fun and a good game.

Actually Watched a Movie

"Head Over Heals" (2001): Was this really just last year it came out? Hmmm... well, maybe it was that I viewed this with four girls, maybe it wasn't. It was okay, and, well, it made me kinda wish the list wasn't empty. No, not a good time to view it. It wasn't bad, just okay. And, I guess I wasn't in the right frame of mind to watch it. Of course, it definitely wouldn't be bad if list people were present - too bad it's empty. As Megan Ge. put it, it's allright. Those people in the movie were dorks, anyways.
"Mr. Deeds" (2002): It's almost like "Head Over Heals" in terms of list-like effect on my heart, but since it's filled with more humor and stuff, and the love thing wasn't the only major plot of the movie, it was much more bearable. And kinda cute. I'd like to have forty billion dollars, but yeah, I'd settle for just one. It definitely does pay (not necessarily monetarily) to be nice - if only it were more true - for real.

brief contact

msteinbe is alive - just severly packing and job hunting. I wonder when former level one will call - she said she would before she left the country so we could catch up. And, start thinking about your August schedule reservations... places might actually be flexible!

Mystery to the Surface

An excerpt from my "Educating Rita" performance report Tuesday night:
OPERATIONS/EVENTS/PRODUCTION ISSUES:
The ghosts of the Foellinger Great Hall are trying to break into the lobby! There is a section of floor, located just North of the brick wall that is just by the Lobby-tile-thing commerating the recent floor project, where it appears the floor is buckling up, like there's this little air bubble under there. The space has been marked with an orange cone, and Robin filled out a work request/problem report (Job Number 3228).

"the list"

empty - STILL.

The Happenings

Thursday "Short Show" Madness

Supposed to be easy and short... guess not. From the report:
- There were not enough programs for all of the patrons that attended the performance.
- Reportedly, there was a patron toward the front of the main floor recording the performance on their laptop. We were unable to find such the occurance during intermission or beginning of the second half.
- Two people came to the theatre around 9:30 and said they were hired by the group to take picutres or something. They explained further and said that it was to be for following the performance, but they wanted to get into the theatre to see the artist in action. With the ticket office already closed, I told them they could not enter the theatre - at the time, we were under the impression that the performance would be ending within fifteen minutes anyways. They suggested possibly watching from backstage, so they were called, and asked that they not go there while the performance was in progress. They eventually just waited in the lobby - much longer than any of us had anticipated.
- Some patrons reported a ticking sound of some sort, like a metronome or grandfather clock, during the second half of the second half. Its true origins remain a mystery.
- Several patrons complained about the warmth of the theatre (although the house did have a large walk up crowd).
- Balcony door 4, on occasion, while in the process of closing, will bounce off of its above-door-hinge, making a loud sound, before coming to a full close.
- Between pieces during the second act, an audio person went from the stage and into the house, and crossed through a row with patrons to reach the audio tech setup in the house on two occasions. We were not notified in advance of an audio engineer needing to make such a journey.
- Some patrons complained about not being able to hear the vocalist under the sounds of the instruments.
- At the very top of the main theatre staircase, along the South railing, there is a little hook/hole from which we can hang theatre ropes. This hook is missing a screw, and is not usable.
- There are honey-bunches-of-rose petals scattered about the floor by Main Floor seat P42. I'm sure they weren't for me.
- On a good note, the floor in the lobby where the ghosts were escaping looks great!

Back in the Day

Back in my day, the Krannert Center Student Association worked like this. And that. And people did this AND that, and all was right in the world. That, and I'm old... at least in comparison to the college kids these days (despite being a whopping old 22). And that leads to Benjam, Vince, and I talking about the history of KCSA in the parking lot of Super K-Mart for two and a half hours Thursday night. It was a very interesting night, filled with Joe Boxer branded products located all over the store, intermingling with the Martha Stewart goods. And, my gosh, the cheap 12 packs of carbonation! And then, I still had to be up to work at eight. Yeah, that didn't happen.

"Casual" Saturday

Oh, what a fun, laid back day Saturday was. Krannert was delighted to have a Graduate College presentation thing in the afternoon, and a short play at night, all hosted by the very fine and sharply ungrape patron services staff. It was all good times, and even included a quick dinner at the Courier Cafe in between with everyone... yummy good times. Too bad Nate E. didn't bring a tornado with him - that would have made the night way more interesting and fun.

System Upgrade

titan.imsa.edu, home to my email account and other various time-wasters was down for most of Saturday, as there was a massive overhaul to upgrade going on. As with most major changes, there were lots of things that were, just, well, broken. It sucks. I don't forsee having to spend 16 hours to make sure everything works, like the last time they upgraded (in 1999), but it's still a pain to have to try to figure out how to make things work the way they did before. For all you IMSA alumni out there that don't know what happened, you should log in (using ssh) - they disabled telnet-ing in, and make sure your mail forwarding (if you set it up) works right. Sigh.

Half Price Appitizers

The lure of Damon's Happy Hour Half Price Appitizers M-F 3-7 was enough to inspire a field trip by Vince, benjam, and even msteinbe (who was magically found!) to endure a stuffing full and five rounds of trivia. It was a most fun experience, and I got a recent high score! Too bad it will get wiped out at the end of the month - tomorrow.

Actually Watched a Movie

"The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course" (2002): Crikey, there's 5.75 I'm never going to see again. No, really, it wasn't a bad film, it was okay. But it wasn't enough to keep me awake at the 11:20pm showing I went to. Part of that may be because I was up until 5am the night before, and had to be at work at 8am, but still. It was a sequence of 1- watch the guy almost get hurt by animals that could kill 100 blokes his size, 2- furthering the secret CIA plot about retrieving space spy garbage, and 3- local people chillin' with dogs and crocs - all in repeating repertory. I slept through about half an hour, but I was assured I didn't miss anything major. But if you like Animal Planet, you'll surely enjoy this more.
"Austin Powers in Goldmember" (2002): Me, three ladies, and Mike Myers on the big screen - it was an experience that was truly lots of fun. Who knew family relations could make things interesting in this third installment of Austin Powers on screen? It was funny, good stuff. At times, it was "eh", but, as a whole, I'd say it was worth my time. A good time was had by all. And, no, not list people, punks. Friends from work.

New World Risk

The glass table at 621 has turned into a full-time Risk board. In my absence, a dry-erase world was drawn onto it, and there've been movie showings and risk games almost every night. Oh, less than two weeks to go - but that also means less then two weeks to pack.

Homelessness

We're now in the season of homelessness. Most people that are moving around around here have leases ending sometime soon, and then, they're homeless for a bit, and then their new leases begin. I am in such a similar situation. My stuff's got to be out by noon on the 12th, and moved into my sibling's place for temporary storage. And then, latest, nine days later, I can move in. Oh, and I haven't access to a vehicle to assist in that transfer process. That's going to make that last week before the 12th intersting. Heck, I'm kinda homeless right now. The Krannert Center lobby is being refinished, so I have no access to my 'office space'. It should be fine by the weekend - while I'm gone.

the Week of Dawson

July 24 - July 28 was a very exciting week. Why, it was the Week of Dawson! Dawson, of Ticket Office fame had the fine pleasure of working the five final performances for them (not that five nights of work is anything overly exciting for me, but...). To celelbrate, I created several commerative "Week of Dawson" name tags, and there was plenty of candy brought in by everyone to spare. Almond Joys, Kit Kats, chewy Jolly Ranchers, Hershey Kisses... all good stuff.

Trivial Pursuit

The trivia madness continued with a Buffalo Wild Wings reunion of sorts Tuesday night. Many people still in the area gathered for the once weekly tradition of thirty-cent wings and random questions where the answer is "four"!. Since the depature of Chris to the nation's patent place of business, this night of fun has since not happened with the frequency or regularity as it did before. Or, it could be that it's summer, and there really isn't a lot of people around. But anyways, that was a fun three and a half hours.
